Projects: Youth District Updates
SWIS District Optimists Sponsor Tri-Star Basketball Contest
March 21, 2009

Optimists from the Mukwonago Optimist Club set up a competition for over 150 kids between the ages of 8 and 13. These kids were winners
from 21 of the 61 clubs in Southern Wisconsin.

Kudos to Joe Mundwiler and his Committee for putting together a wonderful competition.

Here is a photo of Joe speaking to the contestants and parents.

Here is a photo of some of the volunteers.

The Mukwonago National Honor Society and Key Club provided escorts to take contestants to each station. Here is a photo of some of the High School volunteers.

Here is a photo of the volunteers getting everything ready.

Here is a photo of the registration stand with everything under control.

Here is a photo of Governor Barb Nelson talking to the competitors.

The kids competed in 3 different skills tests, passing, dribbling and shooting. Here are photos of the passing station.

The passing station has the contestant make 3 chest passes and 3 bounce passes into the target. The younger contestants pass from a closer line than the older ones.

Here is a photo of one of the volunteers showing the contestants the proper way to run the dribbling (Ball Handling) station.

Here are examples of contestants performing tasks at the dribbling (Ball Handling) station. The dribbling station is a set of obstacles and the contestant weaves in and out while dribbling a basketball. The faster you complete the course, the better the score.

The shooting skills station has each contestant make 4 Free Throw shots and 2 other shots from outside the "key". The contestant receives points for each basket made. The younger contestants use a smaller ball and are in front of the regulation free throw line for their shots.
