Projects: Youth District Updates
SWIS District Optimists Sponsor Tri-Star Basketball Contest
April 9, 2011

Optimists from the Mukwonago Optimist Club set up a competition for 112 kids between the ages of 8 and 13. These kids were winners from 19 of the 59 clubs in Southern Wisconsin.

Kudos to Joe Mundwiler and his Committee for putting together a wonderful competition. Thanks to Mukwonago Optimist Club member Fred Kreutz for all the wonderful photos. It was difficult to choose which ones to use!

Here is a photo of contestants being registered.

Here is a photo of the registration stand with everything under control.

Here is a photo of Governor CoryAnn St. Marie-Carls talking to the competitors.

The kids competed in 3 different skills tests, passing, dribbling and shooting. Here are photos of the passing station.

The passing station has the contestant make 3 chest passes and 3 bounce passes into the target. The younger contestants pass from a closer line than the older ones.

Here are examples of contestants performing tasks at the dribbling (Ball Handling) station. The dribbling station is a set of obstacles and the contestant weaves in and out while dribbling a basketball. The faster you complete the course, the better the score.

The shooting skills station has each contestant make 4 Free Throw shots and 2 other shots from outside the "key". The contestant receives points for each basket made. The younger contestants use a smaller ball and are in front of the regulation free throw line for their shots.

Once the contestants finish their events, the escort takes them to the scoring table to tally the scores and identify the winners in each age group.

At the District level, they recognize First, Second and Third places for boys and girls of each age. Photos of the winners and their sponsoring Clubs are as follows:
